FotoFocus Announces Biennial Program Opening Events

Celebrations Begin September 29, 2022, with Receptions, Screenings, Panel Discussions, Keynote Lectures by Jeff Orlowski-Yang and Makeda Best, and Talks with JEB (Joan E. Biren), John Edmonds, Mitch Epstein, Dara Friedman, Baseera Khan, Tony Oursler, Xaviera Simmons, and more


The FotoFocus Biennial will return for its sixth and largest edition to date this fall, with an opening week of celebrations and special events taking place across the Greater Cincinnati region beginning September 29, 2022. The Biennial Program Week (September 29–October 8) will ignite conversation around this edition’s theme of World Record, which explores photography’s extensive record of life on earth, humankind’s impact on the natural world, and the choices we now face as a global community. 

The FotoFocus Biennial will activate 90 venues with photography and lens-based art programming in October 2022, including museums, galleries, universities, and public spaces throughout Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky,​ ​Dayton,​ and​ Columbus, Ohio. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BIENNIAL PROGRAM WEEK

  • FotoFocus Biennial Daytime Symposium (October 1 & 2), featuring:
    • Keynote lectures by curator Makeda Best and director, producer, and cinematographer Jeff Orlowski-Yang (Chasing Ice, Chasing Coral, The Social Dilemma)
    • Conversations and panel discussions with exhibiting artists, art historians, curators, and scholars, including JEB (Joan E. Biren), Mitch Epstein, Adama Delphine Fawundu, Cheryl Finley, Ariel Goldberg, Baseera Khan, Tony Oursler, Xaviera Simmons, and Deborah Willis
    • Spotlight talks with artists Myra Greene, Ian Strange, and poet and scholar Jason Allen-Paisant
  • Artist and curator talks, tours, and opening receptions of FotoFocus curated exhibitions and installations at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, CampSITE Sculpture Park, Cincinnati Art Museum, Contemporary Arts Center, Michael Lowe Gallery, National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Taft Museum of Art, and The Carnegie. Artists include John Edmonds, Dara Friedman, David Hartt, and Liz Roberts, among others.
  • Artist and curator talks, tours, and opening receptions of FotoFocus Biennial projects at Participating Venues, including Alice F. and Harris K. Weston Art Gallery, Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library, Kennedy Heights Art Center, FLAG Studio, Wave Pool, and Xavier University Art Gallery at A.B. Cohen Center
  • Walking tour of Wildest Dream at the Cincinnati Zoo, with i.imagine and participating photographers
  • Film screening of Landfall and conversation for Jurakán: A Film Series at The Garfield Theatre
