Alexander Liberman: The Artist in His Studio
The Artist in His Studio presents photographs by Alexander Liberman that document some of the most influential multidisciplinary artists of the 20th century within the spaces where they lived and worked. Created over more than a decade, Liberman’s photographs capture painters and sculptors of the School of Paris—including figures such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, and Alberto Giacometti—surrounded by their tools, materials, and unfinished works. Unlike traditional portraiture, these images reveal the intimate environments of artistic production and the personalities behind modern art. At the same time, the exhibition highlights the remarkable range of Liberman’s own creative life.
Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and later emigrating to the United States, Liberman built an influential career as a photographer, painter, sculptor, and longtime art director at Vogue. His photographs reflect the perspective of an artist documenting fellow artists—what one curator described as “a Vasari with a camera.” The exhibition also resonates with Pyramid Hill’s permanent collection, which includes several of Liberman’s monumental steel sculptures installed throughout the landscape. Together, these photographs and sculptures reveal Liberman’s lifelong engagement with form, scale, and artistic community across media.
