Picturing Tomorrow: Speculative Futures in Lens-Based Art
Picturing Tomorrow specifically gazes forward, inviting artists to imagine and construct visions of the near or distant future. The exhibition reveals how photography can be used to document not just what is, but also speculate on what could be. This is the long view of the investor, the futurist, and the utopian/dystopian dreamer, utilizing the visual language of today to build the worlds of tomorrow.
Selected artists respond to ideas including: speculative environments that visualize the long-term effects of climate change; future societies that imagine future social structures, family units, or evolving forms of communication and interaction; technological evolution that explores the co-evolution of humanity and artificial intelligence, bio-engineering, and space exploration; the “future archive” where future photographic artifacts are created and presented as historical documents of an era yet to come; among others.
