Katria Foster: Domestic Affair
Ruminating on themes of control, manipulation, and unquestioned social constructs, Katria Foster explores physical and mental aspects of the female perspective in Domestic Affair. While some images highlight a very specific memory, the ambiguity and mystery present throughout the photographs encourage viewers to insert their own narrative into her works. Foster’s photographic subjects are selected through intuition, memory, and analysis of social norms. Within these spaces and moments her work feels intimate and private, yet familiar. The figure in each photograph is almost always alone, yet there often seems to be an outside influence present, creating tension. Foster combines the duality of emotions women feel within both domestic and public spheres: feelings of restlessness, anxiety, and loneliness coupled with those of comfort and safety. Her work persistently explores these contradistinctions women experience simultaneously.
