Culture Crops: Ohio’s Secret Gardens and Hidden Food Histories

Developed by the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum at Miami University, the Culture Crops project engages Cincinnati-based fine art photographer Tina Gutierrez to conduct site visits and create a series of photographic portraits that celebrate the history and diversity of Ohio’s food-growing communities. Culture Crops includes stories of Indigenous, immigrant, and local community and family farmers and the history of the food they produce. The project raises awareness of the depth and breadth of Ohio residents and the land they cultivate across Southwest Ohio. The resulting series of photographic portraits and video interviews tell the stories of these present-day Ohioans, their experiences growing food, and the history of farming traditions. The exhibition is accompanied by a documentary film by Asa Featherstone IV.
